Nuthin’ But Fiber
January 11th, 2006Despite the ups and downs of moving a family of six, I will not whine to you, faithful family, friends and unknown readers. Instead, today I shall talk about fiber!
See, on Monday, dear friend Paula skipped out of work early, picked me up and we drove up to Skaneateles to hit a sale at Elegant Needles. But I knew something she didn't know! There is another yarn shop in Skaneateles called The Yarn Bin (of which I had never entered, because the hours are wonky and every visit up there, she would be closed!) But on Monday, she was open. It was a real treat! Sale yarn everywhere. Boxes and baskets everywhere of discounted yarns. I saw yarns I'd never seen or heard of before that were delish. And yes, some I wouldn't touch with a set of 10 foot knitting needles. But...I did spend a little money. In one of the sale bins, I found two lonely skeins of natural brown sheep Ponomah Mills wool. I love this wool. Its so not appropriate for sweater knitting, but it makes a mean Nantasket Basket, or felted slippers like Fuzzy Feet. I also (from the sale bin) got some Brunswick superwash merino sport/dk in black, to make Dawn Brocco's Clog Socks (which I love and wore actual holes in the ones I made last winter because I wore them so much!). Lets see, what else did I score at Yarn Bin? A single ball of Reynold's Alpaca Regal Bulky, which will make an uber soft headband/ear warmer like Panta (which I'm addicted to knitting...stay tuned!) Oh and one pair of Inox double pointed needles in size 0 (I wanted 1) but hey, I took what I could get!
When we were done at the Yarn Bin, we headed over to Elegant Needles, which is always a delight because she carries such fabulous yarn (the entire Rowan line, Manos, Jo Sharp, Dale, and so on) I was hoping to get some sock yarn but all she had was Opal (which I have enough of) and a few lonely skeins of Lorna's Laces which each colorway had no matches to make a second sock (bummer!) But as I was digging in the sale basket (all yarns in that basket, three bucks!) I spotted what looked like Koigu KPPM in the cubbie shelf next to it. So I pulled out all that icky flashy scarf yarn covering it and found three skeins of Artyarns Supermerino and yes, 2 skeins of Koigu KPPM, but in different colorways (another bummer!) I did end up buying the Artyarns Supermerino, only two skeins, and yes I know, I should have bought the third. Oh well, I'm actually thinking about calling up the store today and seeing if she'll ship me that third lonely skein.
What else did I buy at Elegant Needles? Some Rowan Cashsoft Aran for another Panta. And three balls of Jaeger Extra Fine Merino Aran, 2 olive green and one soft blue, from the 3.00 basket, all for, (wanna guess?) Panta!
So all in all, I came home with a load of yarn, but I did not go overboard in the spending category.
I've already knit up the blue Jaeger, and completed a Panta headband. And the Cashsoft is cast on and halfway through another Panta. I can't tell you how comfortable the Panta is, and how incredibly fast it knits. With the move coming, I've only taken one short break each day to knit (midday, usually when the boys are eating lunch) and at night, while watching tv. As we all know...knitting is my sanity.
I'll try to take some pics of the Pantas, but not until the sun comes up. However in closing, I wanted to say, Rowan Cashsoft is possibly the most addicting yarn I've ever knit. People talk about other Rowan yarns being crack for knitters. I kid you not, Cashsoft could beat them all. I would sell my whole stash for Rowan Cashsoft.

Sounds like fun. Hey have you ever steeked? I convinced the big spinning group to spend a day on that technique. I have a book of gorgeous vests but they are all steeked. I am petrified to cut anything. As I sit and type this my boys are skiing and it’s pouring and windy. They will be soaked!! It is going to be in the 50’s friday!!!!!
