moving day nears, and not much knitting going on

March 10th, 2006

So today is our last full day in rural hell. The kids last day of school is today, a half day for teacher's in-service (yippee, last minute packing while tripping over excited and energized children)! Ryan is also here today (yep, I'm setting myself up already...many excuses for Richard when he gets here tonight, on why there are still things needing packing. But really, there is not much left to pack)
Knitting? Haven't had time, or haven't felt much like picking it up. I send out some big love to single parents, because this week has really sucked without Richard around...and it was only one week!
StrlapisI was unable, however, to resist the lapis Socks That Rock. I wound it up into a ball, and with that brilliant Turkish cast on, started out with another attempt at Badcaul. Beautiful color variations! The colors on the skein are really deceiving, you must see them knit up to appreciate them. BUT, I'm a total cable purist. I got through the toe, and second cable repeat, and the random row of light blue, at least to my eyes, ruined the cables. Those beautiful cables deserve a solid color, or something with very subtle variations (like the Nature's Palette) to highlight the details of the pattern. So I'll be pulling these off again and doing something else with the lapis. Another thing...I really have to get a US1 29" Addi Turbo. The Inox Express I've been using for these with the magic loop, are driving me magically loopy. I hate the cable...hate hate hate. And the join is even worse.
So I'm still on the fence about socks for my sock pal. Should I send her the Retro Ribs? I have 2 more balls of the same colorway coming to me, probably not the same dyelot, but I'll only need those extra few yards of yarn for the toe decreases (I guess I'll wait and see how big the difference in dyelots is once I finish them) Or do I go ahead with Badcaul ala Nature's Palette again? Even though the Nature's Palette is not superwash (a fact I didn't notice on the band until I purchased, and wound up the yarn. Personally, I prefer socks that can be machine washed and dried)  Or do I find a conscience, and knit that lapis STR into something for my sock pal? I started some calculations last night for incorporating a favorite stitch pattern of mine, into top down socks, and I would really like to try it with the STR.
I honestly should set some socks aside, finish Rogue, and concentrate on some upcoming family birthdays (Grammy, my Mom, and my sister in law Erin)

Around a year ago on this day..

Hmm. I have to say, I’ve been thinking about those blue Badcauls since I saw them, and wondering if I should break my yarn diet to get some Indigo NP.

I think most people accept that hand-knit socks often can’t be handwashed, so I wouldn’t let that aspect put you off.
