Give Me A Break

April 21st, 2006

I've made a new category called "rant" because I need one.

So I'm surfing through Huffington Post, this morning, where I usually catch news highlights for the day and happened along this story. Apparently this mom in Georgia wants the local school to ban Harry Potter, because of "witchcraft".
Yo, dimwit, its FICTION.
The story also mentions this:

“I’m a true example of how Harry Potter books can open your life to witchcraft, said Jordan Susch.
Susch
says she read the first Harry Potter novel when she was in the fourth
grade. Two years later, she says, she and her friends were practicing
witchcraft.

“We wanted to know if spells, potions and curses
worked. By the seventh grade, I was so depressed, I set a date to kill
myself, Susch said.

Susch has joined Laura Mallory’s fight to get the novels removed from the Gwinnett County Schools’ shelves.

Methinks this kid would have been better off in phsychotherapy. Truly, with thoughts of suicide and all that, thats a way deeper problem.  I wonder how many other children's books this kid thought were real? Goodness, my FOUR YEAR OLD knows that Harry Potter, and everything within its pages IS NOT REAL! How much do you wanna bet these parents have a law suit planned against Scholastic and or J.K. Rowling?

In the words of John Stossel, "give me a break!"

Around a year ago on this day..

Holy cow! Oh wait, that may be too pagan…. I have a girl at work who is “christian” ahem. That is another story. But she said something similar when the books came out! She didn’t want to read them because they were about witchcraft. PLEASE! Don’t get me started. I am sure the same person from that article would also be one of the same people to hold up a graphic picture of an aborted fetus that Mia saw on the way to work. These people are dorks! Okay, I may be running out of room. Off my soap box.

    How are you today?

I’m not sure I see the connection between practicing witchcraft in the fourth grade and setting a date to kill oneself in the seventh grade. Maybe the kid was depressed because her spells didn’t work.

LOL Courtney. Yeah I don’t get it either, thats why I think the kid just needed a psychaitrist anyway, you know, set aside the HP bashing and dig deeper into what is up with them.
But its much like parents sueing Ozzy Osborne and such for “enoucouraging” their kid to kill themselves.
There is always much more under the surface causing the problem, but parents often look for someone else to blame for their inattentive parenting.

I highy doubt that even in this backwards state this mom will accomplish what she has set out to do. In fact, much of the commentary I have read is about what a waste of money and time this hearing is. The school systems here need to have those resources for more important things!

    That is insane!

if anyone should be sued, its the girls parents. Where were they when she was obsessed and practicing witchcraft?! (To the point where it made her suicidal, which all witchcraft will inevitably do…)

Blaming poor Harry Potter! Like his life isn’t hard enough all ready.

    Insanity.

This woman needs a hobby. Seriously, whenever I read about loons like this I always think: “Man these people have too much free time on their hands”. This is what happens when dumb people don’t have hobbies.

    ARGH!!!!

    http://www.ajc.com/gwinnett/content/metro/gwinnett/stories/0510potter.html

Number 4 on the list that supports the HP books to remain is that ” The book’s characters don’t endorse the Wicca religion.”

    WHAT???

Much as I think HP should reamin on the shelves, I can’t imagine why this was one of the reasons to allow them to remain!!!!!
