Everything old is new again.
November 22nd, 2006I'm feeling better today, thank you for the comments and emails. The headache is still dull, and the tribe has not been cooperative in keeping the noise level down.. but thats to be expected. I've been trying to keep them busy while I get some work done (cleaning, Thanksgiving dinner prep) but short attention spans are what they are, right?
I did manage to get one big chore off my list, that I've been meaning to do for a few weeks now. Our next door neighbors, after learning my love for antique furniture, offered us two dressers and two nightstands, all in various stages of neglect. I have champagne taste and a beer budget when it comes to antiques, so I make the best of what I can get my hands on.
They had been passed on with many more antique pieces from a friend of a friend who had passed away, so they kept what they could use, and offered these other pieces to us. The night stands.. they will need to be sanded down, refinished, and redone with new hardware.. and one of them may not even be able to be resurected. The smaller dresser has three drawers, two knobs each drawer and I swear every knob is different. Somewhat charming, but it bugs me. The largest dresser, although it has some serious damage to the top and some veneer damage to the side.. deserves to be left alone. I scrubbed it down good with Murphy's, then oiled and re-oiled, and re-oiled again, with Formby's, and I'll place an antique dresser scarve across the top to mask the damage. Just as with antique sewing machines, the old finish on these pieces, in my opinion, should not be messed with at all, if you can get away with it. I just hide the really bad parts and show off the rest.
Top Left: After I got done scrubbing it down (I forgot to take before pictures, but it was grungy!) Since I took this picture, I did place a scarf on it, a lamp, some pictures and a plant. It looks lovely, especialy with some baskets tucked under it.
Top Right: The very damaged top. The flash makes it look worse than it actually is though.

Bottom Left: The veneer damage. Hardly noticeable once the scarf is on it.
Bottom Right: Lookie! This was tucked inside, and lining one of the drawers. Look at that date.. Its older than ME!
ETA BELOW: All dressed up purty and ready to be used!
