Long overdue holiday post

November 27th, 2006

Dinner was yummy, even though my signature dish, apple raisin stuffing, came out a little dry (what an understatement). The kids however, gobbled it up. Even Dylan, who for two days after, requested "thanksgiving dinner" via leftovers. My apple pie also, was a let down. I'm the first to admit however, that I'm not a great pie maker. I used a recipe from my ancient Betty Crocker cook book, assuming this would be a tried and true, never fail recipe. Ha! It passed the taste test according to everyone (though they could have been placating my cooking ego) But having cooked it the night before, it became a little soggy on the bottom crust. Ah well. I think from now on, I'll just stick my traditional cheesecake.
Our friend Mike drove out from Michigan via Toronto where Becky is now teaching, (and was stuck for the holiday, because of course, Canada does not celebrate American Thanksgiving) The visit was great, although Becky's absence was a real bummer. Becky if you read this.. we really missed you, though I'm sure Mike passed that on already.

On Friday morning I was up and out of the house by 4:30 to do some Christmas shopping. Most everyone thinks I'm nuts, but its become a bit of a tradition. This year however, sucked. Mostly because part of the tradition was missing. Its usually me and my sister Jill, that brave the early morning cold, stop for coffee and a donut in Clarks Summit, then mix in the crowds. The real fun part though, is us laughing at the absolutely crazy people who take it all too seriously. This year though, I couldn't head down to PA, and Jill couldn't come up here. So solo shopping it was. I did get just about all of the "Santa shopping" done, even snagging some much wanted toys at a huge discount. So it wasn't a bust afterall.. just not at all fun. I did buy myself something at Marshalls, and it was dirt cheap. Look how cute that wine rack is!

After cooking and shopping myself into exhaustion, I spent the rest of the long weekend, mostly sitting in my rocker, knitting and spinning (though I did get out on Saturday for a few hours to meet the gals at Panera for our weekly knitting) I have to admit, way more spinning was accomplished than knitting. Even though I finished a pair of Fetching fingerless mitts in one evening.. I finished plying 4oz of sherbet dyed Corriedale (no picture). Once that was done, I started some Fruit Salad Targhee from The Spinning Bunny, but found myself having a very hard time with it, even with meticulous prep and pre drafting. So once the first 2oz was done, I decided to change to a fresh bobbin and start some natural brown corriedale (also from The Spinning Bunny). What a quick spin! 2oz done on one bobbin and the other 2 oz about one third completed on a second bobbin.

And lastly, a package from my SP arrived on Friday afternoon.
Some Harrisville bats in Christmasy colors, Burts hand cream, yummy chocolate, Beeswax birthday candles, beeswax from the friend of my SP, vintage Boye sock needles, sheepie TISSUES (omg!), a rubber duckie keychain (absent from photo since its already on my keyring) and.. not in the picture, but in the actual note card... a subscription to Spin Off!
Thank you so so so so much Secret Pal. You are amazing!
Pardon awful picture. I couldn't get the light right, and Connor kept pulling on my arm to see the picture in the LCD window causing some slight blurriness!
Mini vacation over - Back to the daily grind.

Around a year ago on this day..

I have the same tradition. The husband and I were out and about around 6:30 on Friday morning. I didn’t get much either but the kids stuff is mostly finished. I am not feeling overly inspired in my gift giving this year, I hope the holiday spirit settles in soon.
