Ouch - Uh Oh!
January 11th, 2007As I've mentioned, my stress management system involves knitting and/or spinning. And as you've witnessed recently, I've been doing a lot of it. Even Margene posted today about the Calgon affects of spinning, so the meditative powers of working with fiber is well documented (ok, at least well documented here in knitblogland). However my recent activities seem to have reached a physical limitation, and this really bites.
I noticed yesterday as I finished up one of two felted slippers for myself (I got an urge to make a pair - my feet were cold!) that my right forearm was a bit sore, and my right fingers were cramping. Now I knit continentally, and have not had this crop up for a few years since I switched to this method. But I did recognize yesterday that I turn my wrist a certain way to make the stitch and this is indeed the culprit. It is odd that it only bothers me when I'm knitting or spinning. Sitting here typing? No pain. Lifting Connor? No Pain. Doing dishes, laundry, or anything else? No pain.
Yes, this not only bites, it bites the big one.
So the big question is, which is more valuable.. the use of my right arm, or my sanity?

Sounds like a repetitive stress injury (how ironic). A doctor would probably prescribe some rest. My brother Tim is a runner, and it KILLS him when he gets a stress fracture or similar, but the consequences of not resting are usually MUCH worse.
Course, what the hell do I know?
Love ya,

Hmm, good question. Can you learn to knit with your feet?

Well if it’s the beginning stages of arthritis, ignore, grin and bear. If it’s an RS injury let it rest or it will get worse. Learn TM? Learna new hobby in the meantime? Just my 2 dollars….
Dr Ona has spoken!
Hay howd’ya like the chimpster last night. Pretty pukin’ pathetic huh?

Definitely sounds like a repetitive stress injury. Try, I stress try here, to let it rest some. I realize that knitting is relaxing but how relaxed can you be while in pain? So will you actually be stressing yourself out more when you are already stressed? Does it hurt the entire time you knit or do you get a few minutes of knitting before it starts? If so, then knit for X minutes and then take a break. Maybe by knitting in shorter doses you can help prevent the pain.
