Wing Of The Moth Redux
April 27th, 2007

I have been knitting a lot lately. Stress management and all that. As if there wasn't already enough to deal with, we've been going through the motions of Connor's "transition" from Early Intervention to pre-school. Assessments, meetings, planning, and so on. Admittedly I was not all that happy with how one portion of the assessment went, and as it turns out, this part is an integral section to determine transition placement. In other words, although the team assessment suggests placement in program with speech and occupational therapy, the school district disagrees based on one test result, and will not place him. Their decision certainly does not match my opinion, nor that of Connor's speech therapist OR his special education home teacher. We're left to wait for re-assessment this summer.
On one hand this is good news.. in that, the raw number of this particular section of the assessment says that Connor is not "cognitively deficient enough" (this is indeed good news!) But again, I'm not comfortable with how the assessment was done. Nor was any other information from Connor's assessment used for this particular decision. For example, the delays he does have, are directly related to A) speech and oral motor B) sensory integration issues. Both of THOSE factors play a HUGE part in how he learns (or how he doesn't)
So we're still putting him on the list for attendance in the fall and if he does not assess "in" in August, we'll figure out a way to pay for it and provide transportation. Setting all of that aside, its not as if the district just stopped services, they extended Early Intervention services, so for now, nothing changes. And even if he doesn't assess in for the fall, he will be extended again, and receive services at his pre-school.
And speaking of Connor. My wee one turns THREE tomorrow. It seems nearly impossible, but its true.
P.S. A Shout out to Kris, who is back to her old self, and has been lurking around here (Hi Llamie!)

I’m working on that shawl, too! It’s my ’stealth knitting #2′ project (it’s for someone who reads my blog *cough*Dobby*cough* so I’ve been hush-hush about it). I had to start it 2 times but now I’m on the 7th repeat of the first chart :o)
Happy Birthday to Connor! :o)

Carla,
Go to the next board meeting and state your case. The board is pretty powerful. I am running for the board here and am actually making my speech at Meet the Candidates Night tonight. There is one other candidate. It’s a 5 year term (oy!).
