May 4th, 2007I'm not dead
Richard has been working on a project, taking up all available time on the computer (the one on which my email is set up). No, seriously. I'd get up in the morning, he was already at the keyboard. I'd go to bed at night, he was still at the keyboard... sheesh!
Its not as if I have anything to show for this week long "break" from blogging though. A week ago today, if you asked me if Wing Of The Moth would be done, I'd have said yes (and its so close!). But I looked at the calendar and realized that a friend's baby is due in a mere three weeks. Where the hell did April go?
Originally I was going to make a collection of booties (much like the collection of hats for the arrival of Baby James a while back) But I happened to be leafing through my copy of Mason Dixon Knitting for some unknown reason and remembered the Hearbreakingly Cute Baby Kimono (click this knit-a-long link and look at some of the kimonos others have knit...awwww!)
With my utter distaste for cotton, especially Peaches & Cream style cotton, a visit to the yarn store was in order, so I made my inaugural trip to the new shop in Manlius, A Yarn For All Seasons (my review of the shop later. Perhaps I'll try to share a review with Beth, who will also be reviewing the shop soon.)
I ended up purchasing 4 balls of GGH Tara for the project and I'm delighted with it so far. Its stretchy, much like Calmer, but lofty and plump, knitting at a larger gauge (oh, and its not nearly as expensive!) Although the suggested gauge is 4 stitches per inch, I'm getting 5 per inch using the needle size suggested in the pattern (the yarn ball band suggests a larger needle) And the finished knit fabric? Lovely! Perfect for a new baby's soft skin.. and its machine washable. Pictures coming soon.
I also picked up some Dark Horse Fantasy in a few shades of blue, for a baby blanket (if I have time) For acrylic this stuff is shockingly silky soft with not a smidge of plastic squeakiness. I look forward to working with it, and seeing how it goes. Perhaps I'll even try my hand at crochet for this baby blanket (gasp!)
And something I should have blogged about earlier this week.. The guild's dye day at Kathy's house was on Sunday. Our holiday project wool was handed out, but its incredibly beautiful in its natural state.. I dare not dye it! I took some pictures and have managed to unload them from the camera to the PC, but I'll be writing a blog entry just about that on the guild blog.
On the parenting front.. Connor managed to flush "items" down both of our toilets. Not the type of "item" you can plunge out if you know what I mean. So Richard and I went about removing the toilets to retrieve the items. We've done this before (once, Alex flushed a set of baby toy keys down our toilet that required this remedy)
Things were going well, but the first item, a rather large "gun" from Alex's Starscream Transformer was really stuck in a bend. Our efforts to get it to move turned to disaster when Richard's hand slipped and the porcelain toilet fell to pieces on our patio. Ugh! The bright side of this? Starscream's gun slid right out. HA!
And we easily unblocked the other toilet (he flushed a pencil!) so the unbroken toilet was easily replaced. And today we'll work on replacing the broken one. Everyone looks forward to toilet shopping, right? I thought about buying some toilet locks, but at this point, he can pretty much break into anything.. I need to develop another plan.

Hi Carla,
Just a quick note to let you know that a small gift should arrive for you in the mail soon-ish: I just found something great for you on etsy, and it was easier to have it mailed direct than to have it shipped over here and then ship it back!
Love,

I loved making that kimono. I did it in the garter stitch but there’s another baby to knit for so I’m going to try it in stockinette next.
