Toys linked to a date-rape drug recalled

China-made beads for kids metabolize into GHB when ingested

WASHINGTON - Millions of Chinese-made toys have been pulled from shelves in North America and Australia after scientists found they contain a chemical that converts into a powerful “date rape” drug when ingested. Two children in the U.S. and three in Australia were hospitalized after swallowing the beads.

With only seven weeks until Christmas, the recall is yet another blow to the toy industry — already bruised by a slew of recalls last summer.

In the United States, the toy goes by the name Aqua Dots, a highly popular holiday toy distributed by Toronto-based Spin Master Toys. It is called Bindeez in Australia, where it was named toy of the year at an industry function earlier this year.

I think my title is about all I can say. I'm actually speechless.

    My kids actually watch this commercial so often on their favorite channels; Disney being the most promoting. I am sick and tired of this toy thing. I don’t even want to buy the kids anything. It is getting so ridiculous that we can’t depend on our “reputable” toy companies to sell safe toys. I think it will be unpainted blocks and rag dolls for my kids from now on.

    According to the NY Times the American version is made by a different manufacturer in China and they do not contain the GHB chemical. They pulled them off as a precaution to be completely sure but so far the tests are negative.

    Scary nonetheless…

    This is just horrible. There really are no words for it at all. I’m afraid to buy anything anymore unless it is made in this country. Even then I’m nervous!

    Anyone that buys ANYTHING knowingly from China anymore is bonkers. Give food, homemade toys etc for Christmas.
