The “first annual” birthday surprise contest.

November 1st, 2007

In a few days, on Sunday to be exact, I will celebrate my first annual 39th birthday. This is a big milestone, no? Well, maybe it isn't since I plan to celebrate the same birthday every year from here on out.

So I'd like to entertain a little reversal here, and have a little contest. No answering questions, no donations to charities, just leave a comment telling me about a favorite birthday present you've received. I'll pick one at random on Sunday, November 4th and put together a little surprise package for the winner. See, as much as I love receiving surprises.. I adore putting together surprises for others. If the winner is a knitter or spinner, perhaps you'll get a nice fibery surprise in the mail. If you're not, maybe an Amazon or iTunes gift certificate... I have lots of ideas!

And here, I'll get you started. What is my favorite birthday present? Cassidy! She was born just a few months shy of my 30th birthday, and I had always wanted a baby before I turned 30 (weird.. I know!) But besides all of that, Richard and I were both surprised, since we had always thought our path to parenthood would be a difficult one. We were looking at facing lengthy and heartbreaking fertility cycles.. then there it was.. a positive pregnancy test, all on our own. And after a rocky first trimester, when we were expecting the worst to happen every day, despite bed rest and progesterone supplements, we were truly blessed... just in time to fulfill my 30th birthday wish.

Now, go, and tell me all about your favorite birthday present! As you can tell, it doesn't have to be a "thing", it can be "the perfect day", a great meal... anything.

P.S. Scorpios Rule!

Around a year ago on this day..

DO I get extra points for saying the socks you knit me last year?

I do love them but I also LOVED going to dinner in Miami with Roger. We used to go to Norman Van Aiken’s place http://www.normans.com Tasting menu with the full flight of wine. Yummy tipsy fun!

Scorpio’s DO rule — my birthday was this week too — my second annual 39th birthday. My favorite gift is the letter I got this year from my daughter. (Of course, the wheel I got last year from my husband for my first, first annual 39th birthday is pretty great.)

I can identify with the best present being your children. I did go down the lengthy road before the kids were born - 1/2 way between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. My children are without a doubt my best present. However, the second best, and actually for my birthday, was babysitting so I could enjoy a nice dinner with my husband in a nice restaurant for a change.

    Happy Birthday!

    Happy early birthday!!!

My most recent favorite birthday present is my waffle maker. Color me silly, but I love it–I love being able to make waffles for weekend brunch whenever I want!

A few days after yours — on Tuesday, to be exact — I’ll be celebrating the 10th anniversary of my 39th Birthday!!! Woohoo, Scooby-doo, Scorpios do definitely rule.

How funny is it that yours was the first blog to appear when I hit the NaBloPoMo Randomizer button?!?!?!?!?

    - hum… tuesday will be my 16th annual 39th birthday :-) I think one of my favorites was going to Red Lobster and finding a pearl in my fried oysters. But my favorite would be visiting with all my kids and grandkids without the stomach flu, of course…
    - And let’s not forget that my son was born just 8 days after my 20th birthday ;-) Which brings up another favorite birthday… my son telling me he was in love (6th annual 39th birthday)… And this year will be another favorite with his dad.
… have a wonderful birthday, wish we could be there to celebrate with you.
    love and miss y’all
    Ma

husband and daughter made this mini diorama of my favorite things….knitting , spinning sheep etc . they worked “secretly” for several weekends. it is by no means a professional job . lots of tape and glue. cotton ball sheep ,a spinning wheel made of tooth picks and buttons. it is a little bedraggled now but it was the most sentimental and heartfelt gift i have ever received.

I am glad that everyone is well again. We have had 2 bugs here too this month. Stomach bug and a bronchitis that won’t go away.
My favorite birthday present was last year’s. My husband is back in school and we live with my parents so I can still be a stay at home mom, so we have virtually no money. our 2nd kid, Brigid, wasn’t supposed to happen. Dr. told me no way I would get pregnant again. Bam, I got pregnant and 22 months after Fiona, Brigid came. One May afternoon, after B was born, Mark took a picture of the 3 of us sitting on the floor of my in-laws. Fast forward one year, and I finally get a copy of the photo. A framed 8 by 10. My girls are what I live for. The picture makes me smile and cry everytime I see it. Absolutely perfect!

    Best birthday present:

Last year, my husband and I got married (for the second time) on the eve of my birthday. In the church. Something I’d been praying for for 15 years.

Tough call but I’m going to say this past birthday was my favorite in recent memory. Just having friends over, very low key, enjoying each other’s company.

Happy Birthday. I had my first annual 39th birthday in April.

My best birthday gift was a pair of tickets to go see Spamalot in Chicago. It was extremely funny, and Eric Idle was actually there the night we went. Very cool.

I happily turned 42 this year. 40 sucked but once I got past that, well, the rest is gravy. So, my favorite birthday present ever? The year my present was a weekend getaway at the Publick House in Sturbridge.

My favorite birthday was hanging out with some friends, and eating an ice cream cake and laughing and laughing.

    Happy Birthday Carla!

I just had my favorite birthday to-date back in May. It was really a weekend at a hotel with a casino and Cheyenne concert, but the very bestest part was that I got not 1 but 2 1hr full body massages. I was so proud of my BF for keeping it a secrete and coordinating with my family.

My favorite birthday present came from a homeless man in Ashville NC. I am SOO into halloween and he handed me a handmade orange HUGE chunky bead on a leather string and told me it was a pumpkin. I still have it till this day (and its been many years) it was sincere and sweet.

My best was when my husband brought cupcakes to me when I was on call in the ICU. Just so sweet.

    Hey Carla:

Forgot to wish you a happy birthday. Hope it was excellent and just remember - another year older is always better than the alternative.

I got 2 kids in the last 3 years within a week of my birthday. Perhaps they are my best gifts :) Although I do really love the chocolate cake…

    Hi Carla,

I met you in Madison a few years ago at a Tuesday night knitting group (you were knitting something green.)

I hope you’re having a great birthday! Mine’s coming up on Saturday, and one of my favorite presents was when I was 14, when my mother gave me a little white pitcher with a separate juice extractor top and 12 oranges - 14 presents for my 14th birthday.

    Faith
